Announcing your volunteer needs to the parish

Your parish is filled with people with time and talent. You might be surprised to know that many of them are willing to help with time and talent if they knew what you needed.

A July 2008 study by the Barna Group found out that in faith matters, 41% of Catholics said it was very desirable to be personally active in a church. It's not as high as the Protestant numbers but we're sure you could use that 41% of your parish members to do some volunteer work at your parish.

You're probably already announcing your needs with short announcements after Communion. But you probably also know that the retention span of such announcements are just a minutes at most. Studies show that something read is retained at a much higher rate over something that was just heard.

Your website has a section at the top navigation bar called SHARE YOUR TIME. And that's exactly what it is, it's your online volunteer center. And people can read your request for help in this permanent location. Call it your online Help Wanted section.

What do you need to do to make it effective? You need to populate it with as many announcements as you can for all your volunteer needs. And you need to make sure that you announce it every chance you get.

Tell them about your Volunteer Center frequently. Say it after communion, put it in your bulletin, talk it up every chance you get at meetings, services, etc. Sooner or later the SHARE YOUR TIME idea will sink in and it will become the place to go if anyone of the 41% of your parish members would like to lend a hand.
